ikigai adalah salah satu falsafah hidup di jepang yang mendunia selain falsafah hidup samuari. Nah, mengenai ikigai ini banyak sekali orang jepang yang berumur panjang karenanya. Ikigai kerap digunakan sebagai pedoman untuk hidup seimbang, lebih bahagia dan panjang umur.

Ken Mogi mencoba menjelaskan tentang konsep ini kepada pembaca melalui kisah hidup seorang pengusaha restoran sushi di Jepang yang merupakan restoran sushi terbaik yang pernah ada di Jepang. Pengusaha itu bernama Jiro Ono yang berusaha memberikan kesempurnaan disetiap sushi yang di jualnya.
Ikigai adalah istilah jepang untuk menjelaskan kesenangan dan makna kehidupan. Kata itu secara harfiah meliputi “iki” (untuk hidup) dan “gai” (alasan). Begitu kita mendalami ikigai, kita seperti menemukan alasan hidup kita. Bahkan Ono pernah mengatakan bahwa ia berharap untuk mati selagi membuat sushi, sebuah totalitas dalam bekerja yang patut ditiru.
Buku ini juga memberikan informasi bahwa ada daerah yang disebut “zona biru” dimana orang orangnya memiliki umur panjang dengan menjalankan prinsip prinsip seperti ikigai ini dimana zona itu adalah Okinawa di Jepang, sardinia di Italia, Nicoya di Kosta Rika, dan Ikaria di Yunani serta di di tengah kaum advent Hari Ketujuh di Loma Linda Daerah California.
